Members News - Spring 2008
- First, thanks to all who have rejoined, even though some of you were late. Welcome to all our new members this year too.
- It is some time since I managed to do a members news, so if I’ve forgotten something or someone, please remind me when you see me.
- You will see a number of changes this year. First, the new paths. The lads worked very hard during the winter, with some considerable help and guidance from Bill Hayhurst. It really looks well worth it now. There will be two new machines on the course in the next week, if not already, a fairway mower and a banks mower. These were essential to the upkeep, and should allow the lads to mow quicker and better.
- A number of new Committee members have begun working now, and their ideas and enthusiasm are very encouraging. Please give them all the support you can in their various activities. They are working voluntarily for the welfare of the Club.
- As always, there are many people to thank. In no particular order: Holly, as always. In some difficult circumstances recently, with phones going down, computer glitches, and of course yours truly getting in the way. Not only that, she was also kicked by her horse, narrowly missing teeth and eyes. She has had her nose reset and is as ever as patient as Job. John Turner has been multitasking, washing down tee boards, making and mending benches and generally making himself useful in all areas. Bill Hayhurst - I've already mentioned. Marc, Sara and staff continue to come up with the goods, even when we overbook! A typical example was St Georges Night. Enjoyed by all, and thanks to Arthur from Cornwall, and all those who came. Steve and the Shop gang are busy attracting juniors and other potential members too. The gardening gang still manage, in spite of the weeds, Brian and Shirley see to the watering.
- The Section heads and their committee members are also continually searching for ways to improve the course, clubhouse, membership and marketing. The competitions have been very well supported, and Mark & team are pleased. We also owe a big thank you to Senior, Junior and Ladies organising committees, not forgetting Simon Evans with P&D.
- It looks like Summer is here at last (or has it just been?). Mr. Captain remarked lately that he is already 5 months into the job! Knockouts should be in full swing now, President’s Day is almost upon us, and before long it will be winter league again!
- We are very pleased to hear that both Jim Shipley and Peter Ebden are making progress. Jim hopes to be back playing again later this summer, though for Peter it may take a little longer.
- Finally, to all the ‘established’ members, please make every effort to welcome newer members to the Club. Sometimes they need help with what we take as routine, such as booking in, entering cards, marking, scoring and the rules. They do not always ask for this help, so keep a lookout for guys scratching their heads wondering what to do. Thank you and good golfing.
